Of all the fantasies in all the world, being an artist by the sea is surely one of the most popular. To do so on 19th-century farm on the cliff of a breezy peninsula is simply the stuff of fairytales!
The owners of historic Spray Farm on the Bellarine Peninsula engaged Watts Studio and Amiconi Architect to design a new studio on the ocean side of the property where the pair of artists could spend days painting and looking out over the sea. Taking the heritage-listed homestead and the history of the farmhouse locale as inspiration, the designers created a space greatly informed by surrounds but with its own contemporary characteristics.
With sweeping views out over Corio Bay and the You Yangs mountain range, the main point became to design a building where both artist and architecture could settle into the landscape.
For our latest instalment of Design Eye, we introduce an emerging design studio destined for big things!
Studio Martin is a small Architecture and Design practice run by sisters Amanda and Lauren Martin, in Melbourne. Since launching their studio two and a half years ago, the sisters have developed a distinctive, refined aesthetic, often pairing lux finishes with much more relaxed and textural details – such as the use of rattan, in both commercial and residential settings.
Here the pair share their thoughts on using rattan in contemporary interiors, and introduce us to heritage Danish brand Sika Design, available exclusively at DOMO.
When Josh Jessup and Matt Moss moved from Sydney to Melbourne in February of this year, they had 30 followers on TikTok. Now, just a few months later, the couple have a following more than 117,000 people strong and have amassed over 4.6 million likes… and counting!
But social media is just one facet of their exuberant creative output. From their vibrant apartment in Melbourne’s CBD, the pair run Matt and Josh Design – the homewares label under which they sell their distinctive handmade art pieces. From geometric candles that reveal a technicolour lava once they’ve melted, to modular ceiling mobiles, their pieces are whimsical, fun and totally original. Just like their home!
