After a chilly Melbourne winter, we’ve been doing a spot of desk dreaming of getaways in warmer Northern climates. Enter, our Brisbane contributor Jo Hoban, with this epic travel experience in Queensland’s southeast!
Having recently hiked the iconic Spicers two-day Scenic Rim Trail, Jo was bubbling with enthusiasm for the western Scenic Rim region, just over an hour’s drive inland from Brisbane. While there have been devastating bushfires in some parts of the Scenic Rim recently, this section has luckily avoided the burn so far.
Jo, along with photographer, Mindi Cooke, showcase some appealing stops for exploring, eating, drinking, and shopping, from Kalbar to Spicers Peak.
The Otways Loft in the tiny Victorian town of Forrest is wedged between mountain ash rainforest and the Mount Cowley terrain. This magical timber home is built from materials salvaged from train carriages and demolished churches.
Part tree-house, part train-house, part-cabin – Otways Loft is a picturesque retreat fit for a reclusive writer. Or if you’re not writing your memoir, just a quiet, nature-filled vaycay!
It was bucketing down with rain as we drove out of Auckland. I was in New Zealand to cover the Auckland Art Fair, and lucky to have found myself in some pretty unbelievable scenarios over the course of the trip (including my first-ever meeting of a Sir at an art-filled estate, but I’ll save that story for another day).
Miraculously, the clouds parted just as we pulled into Gibbs Farm. Part Jurassic Park, part Westworld, part am-I-still-on-planet-Earth, entry to the private sculpture park caused such a collective jaw drop I’m surprised the car didn’t tip over.
Tamarama is tucked between Bronte and Bondi Beach… aka one of Sydney’s most enviable beachside locations. Interior designer Tamsin Johnson and husband Patrick Johnson (designer and tailor of P. Johnson fame) fortuitously stumbled upon their 1970’s home here, and purchased it the very next day, before undertaking a complete re-design for their young family.
Tamsin and Patrick share this serene space with kids Bunny (18 months) and Arthur (3 years). A dreamy coastal delight, within arms reach of the city!
